LET THE BIBLE SPEAK ABOUT DEATH

By Mike Gurganus

INTRODUCTION:

I know a preacher…

He speaks boldly.

He is not popular, but everyone listens when he speaks.

He travels to every part of the world speaking to everyone in his own language.

I know a preacher…

He preaches to the rich and the poor alike.

He is never longwinded and he never changes his text.

He is eloquent. He is able to stir up emotions even in those who claim they have no emotions.

He often brings tears to the eyes of those who seldom weep.

I know a preacher.

His arguments—irrefutable.

His influence—undeniable.

He shatters life and he disturbs the status quo.

I know a preacher…

Most people hate him and almost everyone fears him.

Every tombstone is his pulpit and every newspaper prints his text.

And one they he will preach to me and one day he will preach to you.

I know a preacher…

And his name is death. (David Lane, 1997 F.H.U. Lectures)

  1. "And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment."Hebrews. 9:27
  1. Let us allow the Bible to speak about four sobering and solemn facts concerning the Biblical subject of death.

One sober and solemn fact concerning death—

  1. DEATH IS CERTAIN. "And as it is appointed unto man once to die …"
  1. It has been said that man during his lifetime must do two things.
    1. Pay taxes and die.
    2. G.B. Shaw "the universal statistic in regard to death is the same: one out of every one dies."
  1. Little as we like to think about it we all our aware that death is the common lot of the human race.
    1. Personal experiences-

    2. Death occurs because:
      1. Because of Adam and Eve’s sin. Genesis 2:16,17; 3:22
      2. We all must face the consequences. Gen. 5

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die…" (Eccl. 3:1,2)

A Second Sober And Solemn Fact Concerning Death—

  1. DEATH IS UNCERTAIN. "And as it is appointed unto man once to die…"
  1. Death is an appointment; but we do not know when this appointment is.
  1. "For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away." (James 4:17)
    1. Obituaries—ages vary from infant to the elderly.
    2. Luke 12:13-21,

Then one from the crowd said to Him, Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me. But He said to him, Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you? And He said to them, Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses. Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops? So he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry. But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided? So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

A Third Sober And Solemn Fact Concerning Death—

  1. DEATH IS FINAL. "And it is appointed unto man once to die…
  1. We only have one life to live and thus we have only one life to give.
  1. We are but a step away from eternity.
    1. We often use checklists to determine if we are prepared to travel.
    2. How many of us have spiritual checklists to determine if we are prepared to die, "And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments."
      I John 2:3

A Fourth Sober And Solemn Fact--

  1. DEATH IS NOT FINAL. "And as it is appointed unto man once to die, but after this the judgment."
  1. It has been said "Dying would be easy if dying were all"
  1. How many of us will enter judgment boldly, "Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love." (I John 4:17,18)

  2. The Bible has spoken to four sober and solemn facts concerning death.
  • Death is certain.
  • Death is uncertain.
  • Death is final.
  • Death is not final.
  1. You can not escape death nor can you cheat death. And how you lived while on this earth will determine where you will live after you leave this earth.
  2. So, "Are you ready to die?" Your soul depends upon your answer.
